Our Animal Friends

Children have the power to change the world by contributing to the "Heifer Effect," the idea that even a small change can make a big difference. Teach your students how just a few ducks, a goat, water buffalo or other farm animals can change the lives of struggling families. Remember, when these families "pass on the gift" of their animal's offspring to others, your gift turns into many gifts.

Let's say your students decide to give a goat and a flock of chicks. The family who receives the flock of chicks will have protein-rich eggs to eat and maybe even some extras to sell. The family who receives the goat will have milk to drink, plus extra milk to sell or make into cheese and yogurt. Money from the sale of eggs and milk may make it possible for these families to afford school fees and books, medical care, improved housing and other necessities.
